“I work in the maritime industry as a Naval Architect. I’ve been working here in Denmark for half a year. We’re basically in the business related to ship maintenance and analysis of existing vessels. We work with the modifications, retrofits, implementation of greener technology and the stability and pure engineering, that is my field of expertise.
I studied one year here in Denmark, then I moved to Sweden for the second year of my studies, and then while doing my thesis, I got the opportunity through a recruiter and I got a couple of interviews through Zoom and I decided to join the company because it was what I like and the salary was okay. So I decided to sign the contract and one month later I started because I was looking for a job for a place to move to Copenhagen.”

Interviewer: Did you feel ready to start your first day?
“Yes. I have previous working experience from where I came from. So I worked for more than three years back home and when I got my job here I was ready for starting. But still I was kind of rusty because it had already been two years since I last worked.
On my first days, I was really well welcomed. It was nice. On the first day, I got assigned and was in charge of a big project right away. However, I didn’t really like that decision because I was, like I said, rusty, but I couldn’t say no. I went for it, and it took me a while to get used to work again because this is different than just starting. I didn’t expect to have a big project for myself on the first day. Nobody expects that, right?
“In my mindset, I don’t classify experiences as positive or negative. They are just experiences because I still can learn from it. However, I would say that it was not the most comfortable Onboarding experience I’ve had because it was like I started working with a blindfold, blinded. So it was hard to get used to it because there was not really an onboarding process for me. It was working immediately.”

His First Big Project
“I started the project, went through it and the project finished and not everybody was happy because it took more time than expected. But at the same time, my colleagues was telling me: ‘It’s not your fault because you’re the new guy and it is not fair for you to be in charge of a new project right away’.
There was not really much explanation of what I needed to know. It was actually my colleague and it was out of friendship. But he was also telling me what he knew because he also was not onboarded that well. So we discover ourselves and we still are discovering stuff, even after six months“.

The Culture at His Workplace
“The environment is quite tense because not everybody gets along in the office. So it was kind of uncomfortable sometimes. Nobody has lunch together. Sometimes you don’t even talk at all with your colleagues. You say hi and bye. And it’s tiring because you spend most of your time at work working and you should enjoy your work and your environment. You should not only just go there to earn money.
Due to the fact that my employer has not given me a good start, it will have affects for the rest of my employment. Because I’m tired, stressed and uncomfortable. This plays against my mood and my performance.”

“I would say that if I had gone through a proper, structured and effective onboarding programme, could be 2 to 4 weeks, I would definitely would have been more effective in my job. I would know where to look, whom to ask and how to do my work much more efficiently.
At the beginning of my new job, I was not really stressed because I’m used to working under pressure. As a matter of fact, I work better under pressure than no pressure.
However, there are two kind of stress or pressure, there is stress because the job is hard and you have to do your best and then there is stress because the environment is not good. Which in this case, my pressure and stress comes from the second one. Which could really be demotivating because sometimes you wake up in the morning, and not wanting to go to the office and when you reach that point, it’s because you are tired of them, right?”.
