Putting Onboarding First to Set the Stage for Success
Pre & Onboarding Experience
As a new hire, don’t let the eagerness to perform and prove yourself take over.

Simone Sonn is a master’s student from Copenhagen Business School with a particular interest in employer-focused communication. She is driven by an eagerness to extend what’s possible. She works in talent acquisition and employer branding at LEO Pharma, a leading global pharmaceutical organisation.
According to Simone, ‘’The key to eliminate the anxiety of new hires is to give them a good start at the beginning.’’ She said it is not only beneficial for the employees, but also for the organisation.
Simone also told us that in order to tailor a superb onboarding program, employers should show their real self and be true to the employees to build a good foundation at the beginning.

Eliminating the anxiety
“It’s key that the new hire is off to a good start – not only for the employee but also for the organisation. As always, good and frequent communication is central in order to provide the foundation needed for a new hire to get settled successfully in the new role.
However, it’s not only about tailoring a superb onboarding program. It’s also about making it authentic. We as humans hate when we don’t experience what we’ve been promised.
Don’t be afraid to show the real you as an employer – even though it means reflecting areas that need improvement… the new hire will get to know them anyway, so you’ve got to own it and be true to who you are as an employer. You’ll benefit from it, and it’ll provide the new hire with the required foundation for becoming successful in the job from the very beginning.”

The most important info for new hires
“Things take time. Joining a new organisation entails a lot of demanding tasks; getting to know your new colleagues, learning the IT systems, and navigating your new position.
Settling in takes time too, so don’t let the eagerness to perform and prove yourself take over. The employer has chosen you for several reasons and truly has faith in you and your performance. Don’t stress about landing in your new role – before you’ll know it, you’ll be fully settled in.”

A successful preboarding connection
“It’s all about transparency and ownership. Let the team know about the new colleague who’s about to join, encourage them to reach out and connect through email and LinkedIn, and provide the opportunity for asking questions both ways.
To ensure attachment between the new joiner and the team, you should delegate ownership by appointing a relevant buddy.
However, make sure you’re appointing a buddy who has time and is willing to take on the responsibility.
Also, it is key that the buddy and the new joiner hold a certain fit in terms of interests, areas of responsibilities or life stage as it’ll then be easier to relate to one another. It’ll increase trust and ultimately ensure more smooth onboarding.”
